April Is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Driving is something that requires you to keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind on the task of driving. Unfortunately, distracted driving is an epidemic in the U.S. that claimed 3,142 lives in 2019.
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, an annual campaign recognized by various safety agencies, including the National Safety Council (NSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While safe driving should be done all year long, this month is a great time to regroup and take responsibility for the actions we make behind the wheel.
Keep Your Teens Safe
Newly-licensed teen drivers are more likely to drive while distracted. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year-olds is nearly three times the rate for drivers 20 years of age or older.
This age group may lack the judgment and skills necessary to prevent accidents, stay focused on the road, and eliminate distractions behind the wheel; some of these common distractions for teens include:
- Cell phones
- Social media
- Noisy passengers
- Sound systems
Parents, it’s important that you set a good example for teens, ensure they are aware of the dangers and laws surrounding distracted driving, and set rules for your teen drivers to follow.
Take the Pledge
Remember that you have the power to help end distracted driving and make our roads safer for everyone. You can commit to driving distraction-free by taking the Just Drive pledge online; by pledging, you commit that you will not:
- Have a phone conversation – handheld, hands-free, or via Bluetooth
- Use voice-to-text features in my vehicle’s dashboard system
- Use social media
- Check or send emails
- Take selfies or film videos
- Input destinations into GPS (while the vehicle is in motion)
- Call or message someone else when I know they are driving
